New Research Shows Promise in Treating Social Phobia
According to the BBC News, researchers in Zurich have shown that inhaling oxytocin may help to diminish social phobia. Brain scans of those who inhaled the hormone showed decreased activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain that is overactive in those with social phobia. Oxytocin is a naturally produced hormone that is linked to trust and bonding, and appears to diminish fears in social situations.
I will post a more detailed analysis of this study soon. In the meantime, it is important to remember that the research is very preliminary. Always follow the recommendations of your doctor or therapist in treating your social phobia.
