By

Updated July 26, 2009

Definition:

In religion, a crisis of faith is defined as a period of intense questioning or scrutiny of one’s religious beliefs. In some cases, a crisis of faith may be linked to an increased risk of anxiety disorders, including phobias. Many specific phobias, such as those linked to death or doomsday, appear to have a religious component and may be triggered or worsened by a crisis of faith.

Examples:
When Jill broke away from her evangelical church, she experienced a crisis of faith, which led to a phobia of death.
