Definition: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. A class of antidepressant medication that regulates the levels of the naturally produced chemical serotonin in the brain. SSRIs are commonly prescribed for social phobias, and are sometimes used alongside therapy treatments for other phobias.

Common SSRIs include Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil.
