Aromatherapy has become big business. From small mom and pop stores to large chains, retailers of all kinds have tapped into the concept of aromatherapy. With so many products from which to choose, sorting through them can be a difficult process. Provided here is a look at the principles of aromatherapy and how to incorporate them into phobia treatment.

What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is an alternative system of medical treatment that involves the use of essential oils and aromatic plant compounds. Aromatherapy treatments have not been rigorously tested or approved by any governing scientific body such as the Food and Drug Administration.

Safety Concerns in Aromatherapy

Essential oils are generally considered safe for normal handling. However, the high concentration of any essential oil can cause skin irritation in those who are reactive. When sold in shops, essential oils are normally diluted in a harmless carrier oil such as vegetable oil to minimize the chance of adverse reactions.

Those who take prescription medications should be especially careful of possible interactions with essential oils. Before beginning an aromatherapy regimen, it is wise to discuss the possibility with a doctor or pharmacist.

Although some recipes call for ingestion of essential oils, caution is advised. Doctors and licensed aromatherapy professionals agree that oils should never be ingested without professional guidance due to the risk of poisoning.

Of course, women who are pregnant or lactating should always consult their doctors before utilizing any chemicals, including essential oils.

Aromatherapy and Anxiety

It is believed that certain oils can calm the nerves and elevate mood. Lavender, rose, rosemary and valerian are commonly used to treat anxiety disorders. These oils are typically diluted and spritzed onto a handkerchief for inhalation, sprinkled in bathwater or burned in incense form.

If you suffer from a phobia and want to include aromatherapy in your treatment regimen, speak with a licensed aromatherapy professional. He or she will work with you to develop an aromatherapy regimen that treats your symptoms. Be sure to speak with your doctor prior to beginning your aromatherapy treatment.
