Question: What Are Some Potential Questions to Ask the Doctor About a Phobia?

Here a few questions to ask the doctor at a first phobia appointment.

Answer: Most questions for the doctor fall into a few basic categories:
  • Clarification: If your doctor uses any jargon that you do not understand, ask him or her to explain. Ask follow-up questions to be sure that you understand everything that you are told.

  • Diagnosis: Your family doctor may choose to diagnose your condition. However, many doctors defer to the judgment of a mental health professional. If you are unsure whether your doctor has given you a diagnosis, feel free to ask.

  • Medication Information: Your doctor may prescribe a medication to treat your phobia. Ask for detailed information about the medication and its effects. Also be sure that you understand how to properly take the medication, including any foods or beverages to avoid.

  • Referral: If your doctor rules out a physical illness, he or she will most likely refer you to either a therapist or a psychiatrist. Clarify the referral process and appointment time.
