Definition: Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor. MAOIs inhibit the enzyme monoamine oxidase in the brain. Monoamine oxidase breaks down certain neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and serotonin. By inhibiting the enzyme, MAOIs allow greater levels of these neurotransmitters to remain. MAOIs have traditionally been prescribed only if SSRIs do not work, due to a higher risk of side effects. The new EMSAM patch, however, does not require the dietary restrictions of its predecessor and may have fewer side effects.

Common MAOIs include Nardil and Parnate.
