Self Medicating

Updated February 17, 2009

Self medicating is an unhealthy but common coping strategy that many people use to combat anxiety, depression or other painful emotional states.

Alcohol, over-the-counter or prescription medications and street drugs may be used to manage and try and control these feelings. However, these substances may have significant side effects and in some cases lead to addiction.

It is important to stop self medicating and seek professional treatment for your phobia or other disorder.

When Jennifer began drinking a six-pack of beer each night, she realized that she was self medicating her social phobia.
