Question: What can I Expect When I See the Doctor for a Phobia?

Here is what you can generally expect when seeing the doctor for a phobia.

Answer: Your medical doctor will first want to rule out any possible physical illness that could be causing your symptoms. This is generally done using a few basic procedures:
  • Questions: Your doctor will ask detailed questions about your symptoms, other events in your life and your medications.

  • Physical Exam: Your doctor will begin with a routine physical examination.

  • Tests: If there is any reason to suspect an illness following your physical exam, your doctor may order laboratory tests including X-rays, blood tests and/or an EKG.

  • Referral: If there is no physical explanation for your phobia symptoms, your doctor will most likely refer you to a mental health professional.
